Union Station documents travelers at the entrance of Chicago’s major train junction. As a portal between cities, it transports a blur of passerby through the space. People in the station were selected to pose in front of the white frame. The Polaroid flattens spatial experiences into a tangible memory and document. Fourteen individual portraits were later weaved together to suggest multiple occurrences of time and waiting in a single moment. The piece addresses a yearning to clarify the anonymity of strangers and freeze their constant motion before they disappear from our gaze. Fading lights on the station’s marble surface indicate the waning day as each passenger is photographed.
