Battery Cake, 2005
This cake features my documentation of injuries received while being arrested by a police officer in Chicago. The incident occurred when the officer called me a faggot while breaking up a party. During my vocal protest, I was cuffed and spent the night in jail while receiving further verbal harrassment. Charges of battery against an officer and disturbance of peace were dropped during my initial hearing. The piece serves as a prop to narrate this experience to others, and to use a cake - associated with celebration - as a way to commemorate the event. Strawberry filled slices were served to viewers, and the cake was served to the officer of my arrest. |
